2012

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Last year, 2011, was a good year for us; busy, interesting, exciting, scary, all mixed into one. We learned a lot, honed our skills, developed new ones, new relationships, new ways of working, and created a lot of work we’re really happy with. We grew, too. We changed from a freelance outfit to more of a small agency, which was the scary part I just referred to – but it couldn’t have gone better.

We’re just over two years old now and 2012 is going to be a big year for us. We’re really excited.

It goes without saying that we want to keep doing what we did last year. Keep learning, every day, and keep producing work that we’re proud of by pushing ourselves at every opportunity. But we also have a few more specific things that we really want to do, and will.

Movember!

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

This year both me and my fellow mo bro chris are taking part in the ever more infamous Movember season. For those of you who don’t know, this means that we’ll both be growing moustaches from the 1st to the 30th November in the hope that we can get some sponsors and “raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men”. We’ll probably look like we’re auditioning for the next 118 advert, but it’ll be worth it.

If you want to look at our ugly mugs for the next 29 days and follow our progress, we’ll be taking a photo of ourselves every morning here: http://dailybooth.com/whatcreative

Web Design Trends: Don’t be a sheep. Do your job right.

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Trends are everywhere, especially in the design world:
fashion, web design, interior design, even type design – we can’t avoid them. But are they actually a good thing? In many ways I think possibly not…

People don’t buy websites based purely on how they look

The Web Design industry is a little different from other creative industries who may be, for example, purely focussed on creating visual impact. We have many other variables to consider in order to create websites that benefit the users by having a good user experience, and that also benefit the client by increasing conversion and/or awareness of their brand – which both go hand in hand with it having a quality design. My feeling is that some people get so hooked on design trends that they forget what they are actually supposed to be doing as web designers / developers.

We aren’t paid to simply create pretty pictures and seek the approval of our clients second to our peers, we are paid to create usable systems that benefit the users of the Internet.

Flash on the Beach 2010 – A Round Up

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Better late than never, we’ve finally come around to finding time to tell you about our experience at Flash on the Beach 2010, which took place between the 26th and 29th September. Now, we don’t do much Flash here at What!? Creative, but based our experience last year of being completely inspired by a massively diverse range of speakers, we decided to give it another go and make it two years running…

So, without further redo, here’s a round up of all the best bits from FOTB 2010:

Our brand-spanking new website!

Friday, June 11th, 2010

After tweeting yesterday that we didn’t have time to blog this week, it actually turns out that we do! So for those of you who haven’t noticed already, we have a brand new website! And I thought I’d tell you a little bit about it…

The decision to redesign wasn’t taken lightly. In my opinion there have to be strong reasons in order to make it worth while dedicating so much (unpaid) time to redesigning your website, and in our case I think there was. The original site was very simple, and quite popular! A lot of people seemed to like it, but in our opinion it just didn’t say as much about the company as we wanted. There weren’t enough images of our work, and from a clients perspective, there wasn’t enough information on how we approach our work and the way that we build our relationships.

Instead of spending a lot of time working this information into the current design, the decision was made to start from scratch as it wasn’t actually much more work!
