Building Awesome Mailchimp Templates

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

I was given the task of building a MailChimp template the other week. It’s been a while since I’ve done one but I knew the basics of it all. Since I last worked on template building, MailChimp has made some pretty good progress… We can now have hideable areas and the interface that you use for building newsletters seems to be a lot less buggy.

What I’m going to teach you today is how to build repeating content areas, which look different, but use the same piece of code. You can then hide certain parts of the code to alter the layout. You may think this sounds pretty simple but there are a few things to take into account; namely who will be using your template, what skill level they have, and how compatible you want to make the template with email clients such as the dreaded Lotus Notes.

As this article is specifically aimed at MailChimp and their templates, I’m going to assume that you know what MailChimp template tags to use for hideable and repeatable content sections. If you don’t, you can find the template tag guide here.

The Task

Build a content section that may or may not have an image in it. If it does have an image, the image will be on the right, with text to the left and text underneath. The image has a border of 1px with padding between the border and the image of 3px. Here’s an example of the two content section options we’ll be able to achieve:

Review: Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

It’ll come as no surprise to those who have been following the releases of this practical series by A Book Apart, that this is a really great little book. And by ‘little’ I mean exactly that. (It only took about 3 hours from start to finish, and I’m definitely not the world’s fastest reader!). But that’s by no means a reflection on the quality of the content.

Responsive Web Design is a very concise and to-the-point book on how to apply front end development techniques in order to make a single website adapt to be more easily viewed at multiple screen resolutions, and on multiple mobile and desktop platforms.

Long Live Facebook Apps, the Microsite is dead!

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Facebook launched the new page layouts on the 10th of March to bring the ‘Pages’ design in line with Profile pages. The two biggest changes to note are that tabs have moved to left hand side, and there are now a selection of images across the top.

Static FBML is now being phased out in favour of Facebook Apps, which means you can build apps with HTML, CSS and Javascript using the Javascript SDK, or with PHP, CSS and Javascript using the PHP SDK. These files are hosted on your own server and then pulled into Facbook via an iFrame.

The Benefits of CSS3 vs JQuery

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Everyone seems to be talking about the advantages of CSS3 and what it can do, and to be honest I don’t blame them. Along with HTML5 it’s really going to improve the way that we design for the web, making the implementation of seemingly simple design elements, actually simple! But as always with emerging Web technologies, there are problems with uptake. If you’ve been playing around with CSS3 then you’ll probably know which browsers recognise it and which don’t, but in case you aren’t sure… The newest versions of Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Firefox render most of the basics at the moment, but IE6 – 8 doesn’t. Thankfully IE9 will.

So, we can start working it into our designs, right?

Well, yes. But some people would probably argue that (for the time being) JQuery would be a better option. So what are the benefits of CSS3 vs JQuery?

Designing for Touch Screen

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Now, this post was supposed to go out about two weeks ago, and since then it seems that every designer under the sun has written on the same subject – That’ll teach us for being lazy. Nonetheless, we decided to publish it anyway, just in case anyone missed any of the other great posts out there…

By now you should all have heard of the iPad, and if not then you must have been living under a rock for the last few months! Touch screen devices are here to stay and you need to start thinking about how to design and develop to get the most out of them. Apple would like you to believe that the iPad is the only touch screen device that anyone should own (and to be honest it probably is the best), but there are already some strong competitors, and many more coming to the market this year. So, you need to get your thinking caps on and start designing your websites to work with them, as well as updating your other sites, too. There are a lot of things to consider… here are just a few.
